Braced wall panels have three hard numbers — 'looks centered' isn't one
CRC R602.10 gives wall bracing three geometric limits — 4-ft offset, 10-ft end distance, 20-ft spacing — and SDC D0–D2 tightens them.
Three numbers, one tape measure
Wall bracing is where a lot of framing plans quietly go wrong. The panels look centered, the spacing looks reasonable, and everyone moves on. Then the frame inspection comes and someone actually pulls a tape.
Here's the thing: CRC Section R602.10 doesn't ask whether your braced wall panels look right. It gives you numbers. Three of them get eyeballed most often — a 4-foot offset limit, a 10-foot end distance, and a 20-foot spacing between panels. All three are a tape-measure check you can do before drywall closes the wall.
Number one: panels stay within 4 feet of the line (R602.10.1.2)
A braced wall line is a straight line drawn on the plan — the reference your bracing gets measured against. Your actual panels don't have to sit exactly on it, but they can't wander far.
R602.10.1.2 lets a braced wall panel be offset up to 4 feet from the designated braced wall line — and no more. The code repeats the limit for every case: panels parallel to the line, exterior walls parallel to the line, and interior walls used as bracing all have to stay within 4 feet of the designated location. There's a companion rule in the same section worth knowing — no more than two-thirds of the required braced wall panel length can end up on one side of the line.
Numbers two and three: 10 feet from the ends, 20 feet apart (R602.10.2.2)
Now the spacing along the line. R602.10.2.2 sets two limits at once. The nearest edge of a braced wall panel has to land within 10 feet of each end of the braced wall line. And the gap between adjacent panel edges along that line can be no greater than 20 feet.
Verified against CRC R602.10.2.2: "The nearest edge of a braced wall panel shall be located within 10 feet ... from each end of a braced wall line ... The distance between adjacent edges of braced wall panels along a braced wall line shall be not greater than 20 feet."
Read those two together and the picture is simple: a panel near each end, and no long unbraced stretch in the middle. A wall that runs 40 feet with both panels bunched toward the center passes the "looks braced" test and fails the tape.
What changes in high-seismic California
Here's where the base rule and the California rule split. R602.10.2.2 carries an exception: in Seismic Design Categories D0, D1, and D2, the end condition is governed by R602.10.2.2.1 instead — and that section is stricter. It reads: "Braced wall panels shall be located at each end of a braced wall line." Not within 10 feet of the end. At the end.
That matters because the seismic design category isn't a choice — it's assigned from the code's seismic map (CRC R301.2.2.1). Where a site lands in D0, D1, or D2, the "10 feet from the end" number you may remember from lighter-seismic work isn't the default — the default is a panel at each end.
You can get back toward the 10-foot allowance, but only on the code's terms. R602.10.2.2.1 lets panels built with wood structural panel or continuous sheathing methods begin not more than 10 feet from each end — provided each end is reinforced with either a minimum 24-inch panel on each side of the building corner or an 1,800-pound hold-down at the panel end nearest the corner, tied to the framing or foundation below. (Methods PFH and ABW get the 10-foot allowance on their own terms.) No corner treatment, no 10-foot start.
The line spacing tightens too. Table R602.10.1.3 caps the spacing between parallel braced wall lines at 25 feet in SDC D0, D1, and D2 — with a bump to 35 feet only when the required bracing length is adjusted per the table, or for a single room not exceeding 900 square feet. Compare that to the 60 feet allowed for wind bracing at ultimate wind speeds under 140 mph, and it's easy to see how a layout carried over from a lighter jurisdiction blows the number.
Verified against Table R602.10.1.3: SDC D0, D1, D2 braced wall line spacing is 25 feet maximum, "up to 35 feet" only under the table's stated adjustments.
