Your Dryer Duct Gets 14 Feet — and Every Extra Elbow Costs 2
CMC 504.4.2.1 caps a domestic dryer exhaust duct at 14 combined feet, two 90-degree elbows included — 2 feet off for each elbow past two.
The rule that fits on an index card
Here's the thing: the dryer duct length limit is short, and the arithmetic is the part everyone skips.
The 2025 California Mechanical Code, Section 504.4.2.1, caps a domestic dryer moisture exhaust duct at a total combined horizontal and vertical length of 14 feet (4267 mm) — and that 14-foot allowance already includes two 90-degree elbows. Then comes the line that sinks relocated laundries: "A length of 2 feet (610 mm) shall be deducted for each 90 degree elbow in excess of two."
So two elbows are baked in. Every elbow after that eats 2 feet off your total.
Verified against the 2025 California Mechanical Code, §504.4.2.1 (Title 24, Part 4; effective January 1, 2026): the duct "shall not exceed a total combined horizontal and vertical length of 14 feet (4267 mm), including two 90 degree elbows. A length of 2 feet (610 mm) shall be deducted for each 90 degree elbow in excess of two."
Count the elbows before you measure the run
The math is simple once you write it down:
- Two elbows or fewer: full 14 feet of combined run.
- Three elbows: 14 − 2 = 12 feet.
- Four elbows: 14 − 4 = 10 feet.
- Five elbows: 14 − 6 = 8 feet.
That's where relocated laundries fail. Move a dryer out of a garage and into an interior closet — or stand up a laundry in an ADU — and the vent has to turn: up off the dryer, over the top plate, across a bay, and out through the wall. Four 90s is easy to hit. Now your real budget is 10 feet, not 14, and the "shortest path" someone eyeballed on the plan blew past it two turns ago.
The failure mode is the same on both sides of the counter. The installer routes the cleanest-looking path without doing the subtraction. The plan checker measures the drawn run and never counts the elbows against it. Nobody did the arithmetic, so nobody caught it — until the framing inspection, or a lint-clogged duct a year later.
The starting point matters too
A couple of adjacent numbers keep the count honest.
The exhaust duct itself has to be rigid metal with smooth interior surfaces, not less than 4 inches nominal (100 mm) in diameter, per 504.4.2. Ribbed flex tubing stuffed into a wall isn't this duct.
The flexible piece behind the dryer is the transition duct — a separate, listed component under 504.4.2.2, permitted up to 6 feet (1829 mm), and it shall not be concealed within construction. Don't confuse the flex you can see with the rigid duct in the wall; they're governed by different lines.
The out: a listed power ventilator
Here's the release valve most people forget. Section 504.4.2.1 opens with "Unless otherwise permitted or required by the dryer manufacturer's instructions and approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction" — and it carries an explicit exception.
Where a dryer exhaust duct power ventilator is used per 504.4.2.3, the 14-foot cap goes away and the maximum length follows the power ventilator manufacturer's installation instructions instead.
Those boosters aren't a loophole; they're listed equipment. 504.4.2.3 requires the ventilator for a single residential dryer to be listed and labeled to UL 705 and installed to the manufacturer's instructions. Spec the right one, cite the section, and a long run that can't make the 14-foot math becomes a compliant install.

What to do with it
Two moves cover almost every job:
- Measure and count. Add horizontal plus vertical run, count the 90s, subtract 2 feet for every elbow past two. If you're over, you're over.
- If you're over, spec the booster. A listed power ventilator per 504.4.2.3 removes the length cap — put it on the plans and name the section.
Manufacturer instructions can be more restrictive, and your local jurisdiction can amend. Confirm the specifics with your building department before you commit to a routing. This isn't legal advice — it's the number to check before the wall closes up.
